Our kids deserve better

I signed the petition for Jamie Oliver's food Revolution tonight.  Even though so much of it is focussed in the States, we here in Canada also need to get on board.  One of his big campaigns has been against flavoured milk.  In the school lunch programs throughout the United States children are given an option of white, chocolate or strawberry milk.  I'm sure you can guess which ones the kids drink most.  Now, you may say that we don't really have those programs here in Canada or even here in BC.  That is not true, we do have lunch programs and in little L's school they have a milk program.  Three times a week milk is delivered to the classrooms and they have the choice of chocolate or white milk.  The big difference here is that it is the parents who order the milk, not the kids.  Would you be surprised to hear that the parents are ordering the chocolate milk over the white more often than not?  Well, don't be.  Before I continue, I want to say that I understand why parents are part of the milk program, it seems like a good, healthy option for kids and if the chocolate makes it go down a little easier, then why not?

I'll tell you why.  The chocolate milk has 26grams of sugar and 270mg of sodium.  Compare that to 12g of sugar and 120mg of sodium in the white milk.  The chocolate milk has double the sugar and over twice the amount of sodium.  That is almost the same amount of sugar as a Little Debbie Swiss roll (2 in a pack). This is nuts.  Our kids deserve better and our teachers deserve better.  And this is just the tip of the iceberg.  I encourage you to sign the petition and get involved.  I know that all parents love their children and are trying to do the best they can for them.  I also know that there is a lack of education and information about what goes into our mouths and we need to spread the word and support each other in making better decisions about what we eat and what we feed our children.  Join me in the revolution!
